*** SPECIAL ALERT ***

ALASKA DELEGATION PUSHES DRILLING IN THE ARCTIC REFUGE - ANOTHER ATTEMPT
TO PLUNDER OUR PUBLIC LANDS FOR PRIVATE PROFIT. TIME TO ACT IS NOW!!!

The crown jewel of our National Wildlife System is under attack! Under
the guise of combating high gas prices a fight will soon reach the
Senate floor on whether to allow oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), a 1.5 million-acre pristine coastal
plain that is home to caribou and many other animals. Opponents of
opening the Arctic to drilling failed earlier this week to kill a
provision in the FY 2001 budget resolution that assumes $1.2 billion in
revenues from an Arctic refuge oil lease sale projected to occur in
2005. Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), chair of the Senate Budget
Committee, built the expected oil revenues from the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge into budget, while Sen. Barbara Boxer
(D-Calif.) led the fight against the provision. Environmentalists are
hopeful that the language will be killed on the Senate floor next week.
Many Western Republicans are using the excuse of rising oil prices to
push for drilling in the Arctic coastal plain.

TAKE ACTION! This bill could be voted on as early as Monday, April 3rd!
Please call your Senators TODAY (Capitol Switchboard: 202/224-3121) and
let them know you oppose plundering our nation's last vestige of
protected Arctic wilderness for a questionable, short-term supply of
oil. Please ask them to support an amendment to the budget bill that
would strike Arctic Refuge drilling revenues from the federal budget.
Urge them to also cosponsor legislation introduced by Senator William
Roth (S.867) that will forever safeguard the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge coastal plain and the spectacular wildlife that depend on it. If
you are unsure of who to ask for, just visit
