LCV-UPDATE 3/31: Action Needed Today to Prevent Oil Drilling in ANWR
========================================================

ALASKA DELEGATION PUSHES DRILLING IN THE ARCTIC REFUGE

Under the guise of combating high gas prices, some politicians are pressing
to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's 1.5 million-acre coastal
plain to oil exploitation. The coastal plain, often called “America’s
Serengeti” because of its abundant caribou, polar bear, grizzly, wolf and
other wildlife populations, represents the last five percent of Alaska’s
Arctic Slope not already open to development.

The Senate Budget Committee last week took up the issue of the Arctic
Refuge, and as a result, language was inserted into the 2001 Budget
Resolution that assumes revenues from drilling in the Arctic Refuge.
Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) on Wednesday, March 29 offered an amendment to
strike the language, and the amendment was a tie vote (11-11), thanks to
Olympia Snowe from Maine heroically breaking ranks with her fellow
Republicans. While the tie leaves the assumption of drilling revenues in
the budget resolution, the strong showing of opposition in committee is
encouraging. However, your Senators need to hear from you TODAY.

This bill will come to the Senate floor for a full vote as early as next
Tuesday, April 4th. Please call your Senators today and urge them to
defend the coastal plain from any attempts to open this pristine wilderness
to oil development.

Call your Senators today (Capitol Switchboard: 202/224-3121) and let them
know you oppose opening up our nation’s protected Arctic wilderness for a
questionable, short-term supply of oil. Please ask them to support the
Roth Amendment to the 2001 Budget Resolution to strike Arctic Refuge
drilling revenues from the federal budget.

Check below to see if one of your Senators is on the Budget Committee to
see how they voted. Make sure to thank those who voted for the Boxer
amendment, and let those who voted against it know you’re disappointed in
their vote:

Senate Budget Committee Members voting FOR the Boxer amendment:
Lautenberg (D-NJ), Hollings (D-SC), Conrad (D-ND), Sarbanes (D-MD), Boxer
(D-CA), Murray (D-WA), Wyden (D-OR), Feingold (D-WI), Johnson (D-SD),
Durbin (D-IL), Snowe (R-ME)

Senate Budget Committee Members voting AGAINST the Boxer amendment:
Domenici (R-NM), Grassley (R-IA), Nickles (R-OK), Gramm (R-TX), Bond
(R-MO), Gorton (R-WA), Gregg (R-NH), Abraham (R-MI), Frist (R-TN), Grams
(R-MN), Smith (R-OR)

LCV will keep you informed when action occurs on the budget resolution.
