Sierra Club Job Description
Job Title: Copy Editor
Department: Sierra Magazine/SF
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief
Context: Assists in the editing and production of Sierra, and other
Sierra Club materials.
Scope: The Copy Editor is responsible for copy editing and
proofreading all
editorial materials, and for the technical aspects of electronic
pre-production
as they apply to editorial matter.
Job Activities:
1. Copy edits and proofreads contents of Sierra, and other Sierra Club
materials. Queries possible inaccuracies and suggests changes to enhance
the
quality of material prepared by other editors.
2. Prepares and inputs changes to electronic manuscripts for design and
production use. Develops and maintains expertise in word-processing and
desktop-publishing software.
3. Interacts with intra- and inter-departmental staff to coordinate
styling of
materials (e.g., Outing copy) to appear in Sierra.
4. Maintains, updates and implements Sierra style manual.
5. Does fact-checking and other editorial research as directed; works with
interns and volunteers to perform magazine-related tasks.
6. As required, serves as editor for articles or departments. In these
cases,
determines focus, works with author(s), rewrites or revises as needed.
7. In performance of activity (1) above, corresponds with authors and
consultants as required.
8. Prepares special projects and reports as requested, including the
bimonthly
Sierra reader survey.
9. Attends and participates in editorial planning meetings.
10. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Overtime Disclosure:
Periodic overtime is required to meet magazine deadlines. Project-related
overtime will rarely exceed 5 hours weekly, or 20 hours on a monthly basis.
Knowledge & Skills:
-- B.A. degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a closely
related
field
-- Excellent writing skills
-- Two years' editorial experience, with strong emphasis on copy-editing,
proofreading, and editorial research.
-- Familiarity with computerized typesetting and typesetting applications
of
computerized word processing equipment. MacIntosh experience desired;
familiarity with Quark Express a plus.
-- Proficient computer skills including use of word processing software.
-- Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
-- Knowledge of current environmental issues.
