Forwarded by Jane Clark Last Chance to Dump the Pumps! Action Needed No Later than Monday Dec. 11, 2000 Please take 5 to 10 minutes to help save over 200,000 acres of our nation's precious wetlands! We need your help to stop a proposed U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project that will drain and damage over 200,000 acres of wetlands in the Mississippi Delta. The Corps wants to spend $181 million of federal tax dollars to build the "Yazoo Pumps" which would be the world's largest water pumping plant. The Corps is taking public comment on the Yazoo Pumps proposal until December 11, 2000. Here is what you can do to stop this disastrous project: 1)Go to www.dumpthepumps.org to learn more, and click on "Take Action" to submit comments to the Army Corps of Engineers and the Clinton Administration to Dump the Pumps! This takes only a few moments. 2)Forward this message to your listserves: organizational members, networks, colleagues, friends and family anyone who cares about protecting the environment and, in particular, saving wetlands and reducing agricultural pollution. Ask them to send comments and pass the massage on. We have only a few more days to make a difference! The Corps will use the Pumps to drain wetlands so that agribusiness can reap the profits of growing more crops on marginal lands that have always flooded. Intensifying agriculture would only benefit large-scale agribusiness while in a region already facing a crisis from pesticide contamination. Already, due to increased pesticide use, virtually every agricultural field in the area is contaminated with the deadly pesticide DDT, despite the fact the chemical has been banned since 1972. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt has called the Yazoo Backwater Pumping Plant the "most cockamamie" project he has ever heard of. EPA and Fish and Wildlife have told the Corps the project must not proceed. But we need your help to let the Corps know that the public will no longer let the Corps get away with building projects like the Yazoo Pumps that destroy entire ecosystems. Go directly to www.dumpthepumps.org and tell President Clinton, Vice President Gore and the Corps to Dump the Pumps! Those without Internet access can write to: (If it's postmarked today, they should accept it).
