This is a New Request for Action concerning the Snowmobile and Winter Use in Yellowstone.  Please read and send an email to support the National Park Services plan to phase out snowmobile use in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

My experiences in Yellowstone during the winter was mixed.  When I was away from the snowmobile-groomed roads it was VERY peaceful.  However when I was either near a road, or in one of the lodges, restaurants, or other facilities, you could always bet on hearing a snowmobile zipping by your location.  Even once they past and were long gone, you could smell the fumes....Yes, even inside the buildings.  When the snowmobile riders came inside for lunch, etc., the stench of the fumes came with them.  Now imagine being a Bison, Elk, or park employee.  Would you want to put up with the annoying sounds and the stench?????  Even the use of snowmobiles by conscientious users can stress the wildlife and pollute the air and water of our nation's first national park.

Dear Friend of Yellowstone,

After years of public involvement and rigorous study, the National Park Service has proposed that its November 22 decision to phase out snowmobiles from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks be formalized in the Federal Register.  This step will help the Park Service restore clean air and quiet, and protect winter-stressed wildlife and visitor experience by putting the weight of federal regulations behind the snowmobile phaseout.

TO ENSURE THAT THIS STEP IS TAKEN, PLEASE SEND YOUR SUPPORTIVE COMMENTS TO THE PARK SERVICE BY JANUARY 17.

The Park Service's Record of Decision, signed the day before Thanksgiving, followed ten years of study, public involvement, and consultation with the counties and states surrounding Yellowstone.  The Park Service determined that a phase-out of snowmobiles, and a phase-in of expanded access by quieter and cleaner snowcoaches are necessary.  It is the only approach that balances visitor access with protection of Yellowstone's unique wonders and upholds the various laws, executive orders, and regulations designed to protect America's first national park for us and our children.

I want to thank you for taking steps to protect wildlife and restore clean air and natural quiet in Yellowstone. I support your decision to phase out snowmobile use in the park and substitute snowcoach access.  The new system of access will allow people to continue enjoying America's first national park with the knowledge that they are neither damaging the park, nor diminishing the experience of visiting it for others.  We need places in this country where we can get a break from exhaust, noise and traffic.  Thank you for upholding laws that keep Yellowstone a wonderful place for people of this and future generations.
