http://www.purefood.org/Starbucks/starbucks.html http://www.purefood.org/Starbucks/coordinators.htm Frankenbuck$ Day of Action- March 20th, 2001 ------------------------------------------------------------- OUR OBJECTIVES: *To Educate Starbucks Customers about the hazards of genetic engineering and the benefits of Fair Trade and organic coffee. *To Generate Significant Media Coverage Bring attention to this issue that will change corporate practices, and build synergy among food safety, Fair Trade and environmental activists. *To Pressure Starbucks to --- Brew and heavily promote fair trade coffee ---Fulfill their promises to improve working conditions on the coffee plantations of their suppliers in Guatemala and around the world. ---Remove rBGH and all GE ingredients from their entire line of foods and beverages, and to pledge never to use GE coffee in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------- Preparation/Background *Know why you are protesting at Starbucks and have a clear message drafted, e.g. "We are calling on Starbucks to promote fair trade coffee, fulfill their promises to improve working conditions on coffee farms, remove GE ingredients, and rBGH from their stores and pledge to never use GE coffee in the future. *Explore the Starbucks portion of this website thoroughly to learn more information about this campaign, hazards of GE foods, rBGH, and Fair Trade Issues *Look over the sample press packet containing information sheets and a press release. We encourage you to make extra copies to hand out to reporters. Please review the list of local contacts we are including and check to see if there is anyone that we left out. Note: If you cannot afford the copying costs, please call us for an okay ahead of time and we will reimburse you for the cost of additional materials. ------------------------------------------------------------- MEDIA OUTREACH SATURDAY 3/17: ---OCA starts faxing and emailing out the press release nationally. SUNDAY 3/18: ---Local organizers fax and email out the press release to the list we have included in this packet. The list includes the media in your area, add or delete at your discretion. MONDAY 3/19 · 9 a.m. --- Make follow up calls to your local media daily news and TV most important. ---Ask if they received information from us by email or fax. ---If not received tell them you will send it again and get correct info. ---Ask politely if they are planning on covering the story. ---If not briefly explain that it is a major event taking place in over 100 cities in the US and Canada. TUESDAY 3/20 - 8:30 a.m. ---Make a second follow up call and find out if they will be covering the story. ---Fill them in with details of the event, emphasizing that this is one of over a 100 cities around the country and that there will be great visuals for Television coverage. ------------------------------------------------------------- ACTION TELL YOUR ACTIVISTS TO ARRIVE 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE EVENT ACTUALLY STARTS (i.e. tell activists 11:30 am if you are doing a noon event). ---Give a copy of the press packet to the manager or person in charge of Starbucks ---Welcome the media. ---Write down their names and have them sign on the contact sheet. ---Give all media a copy of the press packet. ---Direct the media to key speakers. ---Be able to answer logistical questions about the event. ---Two people to hand out literature to Starbucks customers. ---Leaflet before, during, and after the event. ---This is not just a one day campaign the OCA and our allies intend to keep up the pressure on Starbucks until we win all of our demands ------------------------------------------------------------- COLORFUL SIGNS some suggestions ---"Genetically Engineered Food: Unlabeled, Untested and Youčre Eating It! ---"SAY NO TO BGH" ---"STOP THE EXPERIMENT - NO GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS" ---"NO SWEATSHOP COFFEE" ---"I'LL HAVE A FAIR TRADE COFFEE WITHOUT HORMONES, PLEASE" ---"NO FRANKENLATTES" ---"FAIR TRADE COFFEE & NO FRANKENLATTES" ---"FRANKENBUCKS: GRANDE PROBLEMA" ---Enlarge Consumer Alert posters black and white and color with markers.
