ROADLESS AREAS GETTING UNDERMINED: The Bush
administration has
offered
to "suspend" protection for over 58 million acres of
 national forest
roadless areas "pending a hearing" on a legal
challenge brought by
"timber interests and the state of Idaho" says the
SF Chronicle, AP
3/17. Environmentalists contend that the further
delay signals the
  administration's intention to "undermine" the
forest protection plan
by avoiding "any defense" and negotiating a court
settlement that
would
effectively reverse the ban on most logging,
drilling and road
  building.
