From Iowa Environmental Council, forwarded by Jane Clark The Groundwater Protection Fund is on the verge of being raided ONCE AGAIN! Contact your senator now! The Standing Appropriations Bill, HF 755, de-appropriates the Groundwater Protection Fund (GWPF)! The bill says that any "unobligated or unencumbered" funds left in the GWPF as of June 30, 2001, will be transfered to the state General Fund. The Legislature has already raided the GWPF once this current fiscal year to fund a low-income energy assistance program. Another proposal (the Ag/DNR Budget bill) would take $350,000 from the Leopold Center's share of the GWPF fund for next fiscal year. The language in the Standing Appropriations Bill, if approved, would affect ALL the programs funded through the GWPF. WHAT TO DO: Contact your state senator NOW and urge him/her to protect the Groundwater Protection Fund. Our groundwater is too important -- we need clean water in this state, and the GWPF is how we work to ensure clean water. You can call your Senator at 515/281-3771 (Senate switchboard).
