This is it folks. This is our chance to have a truly different farm bill
over the next 5-6 years. The Conservation Security Act has been endorsed
by an impressive array of progressive farm organizations (and even a few
non-progressive ones, I think). Simply, the idea is to use at least some
of the agricultural commodity subsidies to buy conservation and stop
wasting it on farmers who abuse the soil and water resources. Farmers who
are already conserving their resources will benefit equally.
Time to write letters. This one is for real. Pass it on to everyone you
know. Write your representatives in Congress. Write a
letter-to-the-editor. Ask your friends to do the same.
If this farm bill works, we could probably have more positive impact on
the ecosystem of the United States than all the issues related to
National Forests and National Parks combined. This is not denigrating the
importance of those issues, simply stating the extreme importance of this
act.
