Got this from a family member in Wisconsin. Sounds good to me. Let's do it! Any objections? Joyce Naffier Here is something to consider: Here's a marvelously simple thing you can do to send a message that conservation has an impact. Turn off your lights on June 21, between 7-10pm any time zone. Note that when the O.J. Simpson trial verdict was read, mid-day telephone usage dropped precipitously, enough so to make front page headlines in the New York Times. It would be amazing if the public sent a message about conservation. Better to do this now than wait for the nuclear industry to be appointed to solve our future energy needs. mark your calendar: JUNE 21, 2001 THURS EVE, 7-10pm worldwide, all time zones [see note at bottom] ROLL YOUR OWN BLACK OUT THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER In protest of George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 from 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (thus it will roll across the planet). Its a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle to the sungod, kiss and tell, tell ghost stories, do something instead of watching television, have fun in the dark. Forward this email as widely as possible, to your government representatives and environmental contacts. Let them know we want global education, participation and funding in conservation, efficiency and alternative fuel efforts -- and an end to over exploitation and misuse of the earth's resources. Further steps would involve starting your "blackout" earlier, say 2 or 3PM local time. This could cut AC loads when it counts. Another step is to extend your blackout later than 10 PM. John C.
