Environmental Advocates (EA) will host a Prairie Restoration Walk at the Ed and Jill Wenger Farm in Riverside, Iowa at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 30. The free public event will highlight conservation techniques and native prairie vegetation. The Wengers are enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a federal program that compensates landowners for taking fields out of crop production for a 10 year minimum. The Wenger’s farm includes 20 acres of native prairie grass, with 2 acres of interplanted wildflowers. The prairie is located at 3751 540th Street SW approximately 7 miles south of Iowa City off of 218 south. To reach the farm, turn west from the Hills exit. At the second street turn right onto 540th Street SW. The Wenger Farm is the first driveway on the left. A limited number of rides are available for those without transportation. To request a ride, please call 351-6410 by June 28. Event attendees should wear long pants and comfortable hiking shoes. EA was formed in 1987 to make people more aware of local environmental issues and to promote creative solutions to environmental problems. The organization hosts public educational events, works on water quality and other issues, and administers a grants program.
