Jane: [I am posting this to the Iowa-Topics LISTServ, Jane, as I assume others are curious, too, about how the Special Session will operate.) I received your telephone message after I got home. The Special Session takes up at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 19. The House, as you know, will be meeting at the Historical Building Auditorium. So, there will not be in-coming telephones on-site. People can leave messages at the normal House switchboard number, 319/351-3221, and they will be transported to the Historical Building. But...there will be no Pages, and no assigned seat numbers, so that will greatly slow down how the members receive them...probably not very reliable. There will not be anyplace for them to have there laptops, so email wonąt work well either. I assume some of them will make some effort to access from other locations, but would be a very limited and unreliable way to make contact. Lobbyists and the public may have access to the final 2-3 rows of seats in the Historical Building Auditorium, and will have access to the Projection Room at the rear of the Auditorium. Roll call votes will be by voice, divisions (not a roll-call) will be by standing counts. Very slow, all in all. All of this makes public contact problematic with the House members, and not very łopen˛. The Senate will operate normally, in the Senate Chamber, although they will not have Pages, and I do not know if they will have laptop access. I presume they will have laptops. To summarize, the deals are basically done at this point, and the votes mostly counted. Public input will be minimal, now. It should not last more than 48 hours. (If that, we will see.)
