DES MOINES - Recent hot, humid weather is increasing smog levels this week, according to DNR officials. So far the lung-irritating gas hasn't reached unhealthy levels, but it has come close, especially in areas of eastern Iowa, said Brian Button, an air information specialist with the DNR. He said heat and sunshine can transform air emissions from vehicles, factories and other sources into ozone, the main chemical in smog. It can be an eye and respiratory irritant, burn lung tissue and trigger asthmatic attacks. The AQI, or Air Quality Index ranks air quality into good, moderate and several classes of unhealthy levels. The AQI fell between 80 to 100 at different times this week in eastern Iowa, while most of June was below 50. Values over 100 are unhealthy for sensitive groups such as people with respiratory problems and children. "We've definitely seen a rise in the AQI due to higher smog. Hopefully moderate levels will persist during this hot spell and unhealthy levels avoided," explained Button. The state will issue an advisory if unhealthy levels are detected. "The advisory gives people the option of avoiding prolonged, outdoor activity to reduce exposure. That's most important for those with lung disease and asthma," he said. Last summer, several health advisories were issued.
