From Jane Clark According to the Des Moines Register, the Code Red worm is expected to launch a powerful attack on the Internet starting at 7 p.m. CDT today. There is a free patch available to block this worm. On the Web: National Infrastructure Protection Center: www.nipc.gov Microsoft Security Patch: www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-033.asp Code Red will affect Windows 2000 and Windows NT users. The worm spreads by exploiting weaknesses in the Microsoft software, takes control of computers and uses them to generate a huge volume of Internet traffic. It first appeared July 19 and has mutated since then. It is expected to grow at a "hyper rate" today. It is not expected to destroy files or wipe out documents. Apparently, users of Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me, Linus or Apple are not affected by this worm. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To get off the IOWA-TOPICS list, send any message to: [log in to unmask]
