You are probably aware that the Bush administration is moving to weaken the plan, finalized just at the end of the Clinton administration, to protect the last wild areas of our national forests from most logging and roadbuilding. The new administration would do this by puttin logging and other management decisions back in the hands of individual forest supervisors, leaving the forests vulnerable to being chipped away at, timber sale by timber sale. They are currently holding a public comment period on their plan which ends September 10th. You can write by that date to the USDA-Forest Service, Attn: Roadless ANPR Comments, P.O. Box 221090, Salt Lake City, Utah 84122, urging that the Roadless Area Conservation Rule be allowed to stand as it is written in the January 2001 Final Rule. Also, I HAVE POSTCARDS FROM NATIONAL SIERRA carrying this message to Chief Bosworth, and I can send some to you--they need only to be signed and dropped in the mail. Let me know right away is you want some, and how many (I have plenty). If I hear from you tonight I can mail them to you tomorrow--otherwise I suppose they will not go out until Tuesday. I'm sorry for such short notice, but they were sent to our old office address and I just happened to stop there this week, so didn't have them until then. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For SC email list T-and-C, send: GET TERMS-AND-CONDITIONS.CURRENT to [log in to unmask]
