The Iowa chapter of the Sierra Club opposes
construction of the Hwy 100 bypass in Cedar Rapids.
Our main concern is the effect on the Rock Island Sand
Prairie State Preserve. We are mystified as to why a
State Preserve does not qualify for federally
designated 4f classification. In addition to the rare
plants on the preserve that will be affected by
pollution from vehicles, the State threatened Bysuss
Skipper will surely end up on the grilles of cars even
if its larval food source can be effectively moved.
The Chapter particularly oppose the chosen alignment
but any alignment of the Hwy 100 Bypass will degrade
the Cedar River and its floodplain and encourage
urban sprawl on the West side of Cedar Rapids.
