URGENT ALERT

To: Midwest Sierra Club Trade Coordinators & Friends
From: Dan Seligman
Re: Thomas Fast Track Bill

House Ways and Means Committee Chair Bill Thomas (R-CA) is trying to use
the crisis created by terrorist attacks
on our country to ram through Congress a divisive,
environmentally-destructive fast-track trade bill (HR 3005). Thomas today
postponed Committee consideration of his bill until Tuesday, Oct 9 at 5 PM.
Based on that schedule, the House could vote as soon as the week of Oct.
15.

Thomas's fast-track bill is bad for the environment. It would expand
controversial "investor" rules that have empowered foreign corporations to
sue over our environmental laws. And it denies Congress an effective
decision-making role in shaping future trade deals that could undercut our
environmental laws.

This is not the time for Congress to consider complicated trade policies
that will affect our quality of life and democratic institutions for years
to come. The Sierra Club is urging members of the US House of
Representatives to oppose the Thomas fast track bill if it comes up for a
vote.

TAKE ACTION

We would urge Sierrans to take the following actions right away.
1. Call or write your US Representative today. Dial 1-800-393-1082
(courtesy of the AFL-CIO).
2. Send letters to the editor opposing fast track legislation. (You can
use the language in this message as a guide, but please put letters in your
own words.)
3. Set up an appointment to speak with your US Representative. Share
with them the materials in this kit.
