CLARKE COUNTY DEMANDS A HEARING ON ADL V SOW FARM

DES MOINES - The Clarke County Board of Supervisors cited three concerns
about the proposed ADL V sow confinement facility when they recently
demanded a hearing with the Environmental Protection Commission.

The sow facility is planned to be built about two miles northeast of Murray.
As a farrow-to-wean operation, the site will have five confinement barns
that will house 3,827 animals with a combined weight of 1.5 million pounds.
Below-building pits and a two-cell anaerobic lagoon will be used for manure
collection.

Terry Robins, chair of the Clarke County board, asked the EPC to overturn
the DNR's draft construction permit because of inadequate water supplies,
lack of acres to spread manure and a pending enforcement action against
Swine Graphics Enterprises.

"After extensive review by DNR engineers, Swine Graphics has met all the
requirements for a construction permit to be issued," said Wayne Gieselman,
coordinator of the DNR animal feeding operations program.

The hearing is scheduled for the Nov. 19 EPC meeting to be held in Des
Moines.

feeding operations program, at (515) 281-5817.
