DNR BEGAN EARLY IMPLEMENTATION OF MORE STRINGENT MONITORING REQUIREMENTS FOR ARSENIC DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources had anticipated the adoption of a new national standard for arsenic in drinking water and began early implementation of the more stringent monitoring requirements. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced a new arsenic standard of 0.01mg/L for drinking water. The previous standard had been 0.05 mg/L for drinking water. Arsenic in drinking water is of concern because people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the standard over many years could experience skin damage or problems with their circulatory system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
