The Sierra Club's Air Committee has leadership responsibility in the Sierra Club; -- for coordinating the Club's efforts to address atmospheric air quality issues especially as they affect public health and the environment; -- for coordinating the Club's efforts to protect visitility in our national parks and Class I wilderness areas; --for coordination of the Club's legal strategies and ongoing litigation on air quality issues; --for coordination with the Environmental Justice Committee to address the many air quality issues that disproportionately affect low-income and people of color communities; -- for providing encouragement , education and training to Sierra Club chapters and groups working on air issues; -- for identifying and analyzing emerging air issues and for developing new and amended Club policy, positions and guidelines; -- for establishing and maintaining the Club's Air Forum, which will consist of Sierra Club members and allies with relevant expertise, a vehicle for information sharing regarding air issues. ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY STRATEGY TEAM (EQST) The EQST is one of four Strategy Teams that report to the Club's Conservation Governance Committee, which is directly responsible to the Board of Directors for all of the Club's issues work. Appointed by the Conservation Governance Committee, the EQST is responsible for all of the Club's pollution-related issues work, as well as wetlands issues covered under the federal Clean Water Act. The EQST and its committees help to facilitate effective action at all levels of the Club on the issues for which they are responsible. They help to shape Club policies and positions, recruit and apply necessary expertise, assist grassroots activists, and focus Club resources where they can produce the best results. To carry out its responsibilities, the EQST established five committees: Air Committee, Corporate Accountability Committee, Environmental Justice Committee, Waste Committee, Water Committee. ABOUT COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS & MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES The EQST seeks to achieve cultural, ethnic, gender and geographic diversity in making appointments and strives to assure that at least half of the members of its committees and task forces currently hold or have recently held positions of responsibility with their local Sierra Club Chapter or Group. Applicants must be current Sierra Club members. They must demonstrate a clear willingness to commit the time and energy necessary to help the Committee to carry out its responsibilities. They should be able to communicate through traditional means, email, and periodic conference calls, and must be able to work independently and with others on the committee's programs and projects. Service on EQST committees requires a serious commitment of time and energy. Applicants who are over-committed, as many of our best leaders are, will probably have to give up some of their current commitments in order to serve effectively as a committee member.
