OVERVIEW OF THE WORK OF THE IC:
The mission of the IC is to further the purposes of the Sierra Club within
and beyond the borders of North America by

* empowering people worldwide to influence public policy and its
implementation more effectively,

* influencing policies of the United States government and public and
private multilateral institutions as they affect the global environment,
and

* encouraging public international debate and exchange of information,
particularly on the major environmental issues of concern to the Club
overall.

Current projects of the IC and its members include monitoring international
environmental treaties/negotiations and conferences, such as the
International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Persistent Organic
Pollutants
(POPs) Treaty, assisting environmentally responsible projects in Africa,
and
responding to calls for help from foreign non-governmental organizations
(NGOs). The IC works closely with the International Program staff in
Washington, DC, and with the Program Committees focusing on human rights
and
the environment, and on responsible trade.

The IC maintains liaisons with the Wild Planet Strategy Team, especially in
the area of endangered species, marine issues and forestry; the
Environmental Quality Strategy Team, especially in the area of toxic
pollutants; and the newly established binational (US & Canada)
International
Organizations Committee, which oversees the Club's involvement in
international organizations such as the IUCN.

MEMBERSHIP ON THE IC:
Current members of the IC are Richard Cellarius (Chair, AZ), Juli Abouchar
(Ontario, Canada), Carolyn Carr (AL), Judy Olmer (MD), Michele Perrault
(Sierra Club Intl. Vice-President, CA), Steve Stevick (VA), Ed Wayburn
(CA),
and Larry Williams (DC). Nick Robinson (NY), long-time member and former
chair, has been appointed an Emeritus member. There are currently two
vacancies.

Members of the IC are appointed by the SPST. Currently there are no term
limits, although the membership is reviewed annually.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS
IC members should have knowledge and familiarity with one or more
international issues or projects within the mission of the committee as
described above, and a broad interest in international environmental
issues.

Experience in promoting international interests at the group and/or chapter
level is a desirable asset. Individuals working on projects or issues
relating to a single country or region often are designated as liaisons to
the IC.

Members of the IC are expected to take on the following responsibilities:

* Attend annual or semi-annual meetings of the IC, usually held in
Washington, DC. Travel costs are reimbursed.

* Participate in a conference call of about 1 hour every 1-2 months between

committee
and report thereon at the regular committee meetings and conference calls
as
requested.

* Maintain regular contact with the chair and the committee via e-mail or
other appropriate means.

CURRENT NEEDS:
The IC welcomes diversity of all kinds. The Committee could benefit from
members with a strong experience and/or interest in:
