A MUTED CELEBRATION How to celebrate Yellowstone's 130th birthday when park rangers are forced to exchange party hats for gas masks? Last year, citizen outrage over exhaust and other snowmobile impacts had little effect on an administration determined to keep snowmobiles in our first national park. But recent images of rangers wearing respirators clearly underscore what ten years of science has shown and a growing majority of newspapers and Americans understand: the special interest of the snowmobile industry should not hold Yellowstone hostage. How best to celebrate? Tell the Park Service that wildlife, clean air, and tranquility matter more than the bottom line of the snowmobile industry.
