In spite of the innate wisdom of increasing fuel economy standards for our
cars and trucks, the pressing need to do so to protect our environment and
reduce our dependence on oil, and the incredible hard work of activists all
across the country, the Senate voted yesterday to replace the Kerry Hollings
McCain
fuel economy provision in the Senate energy bill with a "do nothing"
amendment offered by Senators Bond and Levin.

Thirty eight Senators stood up to the scare tactics and lies of the auto
industry and voted against this do nothing amendment.
