Mission Statement & Charge for Wildlife & Endangered Species Committee:
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Sierra Club's Wildlife and Endangered Species Committee
is to involve the organization in issues related to the conservation and
management of plant and animal species and their habitat. The committee
also
functions as a resource group for the Club on matters concerning the
conservation of biodiversity.
Committee Charge:
In order to carry out the above mission the Committee will:
1) Build and support a network of activists to work on wildlife issues,
including threatened and endangered species issues, and facilitate the
exchange of information among network members in order to provide for high
quality and effective activism emanating from the Club's ranks.
2) Develop an activist network within the club to build public support for
strengthening and reauthorizing the Endangered Species Act.
3) Coordinate the Club's responses to legislative and administrative
proposals at the state, federal, and international levels relating to the
conservation and management of plant and wildlife populations and habitat.
Currently, there are at least four staff members, located in Bozeman,
Montana; Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; and Boulder, Colorado; that
work
on ESA issues. In addition, the DC office has a grant-funded ESA staff
person, Bart Semcer. Committee efforts will include communication and
coordination between staff and volunteer entities of the Club.
4) Serve as a source of knowledge to other Club entities on wildlife and
endangered species conservation issues. The committee may also issue
guidelines and recommendations to other club entities in order to further
the consistent implementation of Sierra Club policies and programs
regarding
wildlife and endangered species conservation.
5) Work closely and cooperatively with other club entities which work on
closely related topics, such as the Marine Wildlife and Habitat Committee,
the International Committee, and the Club's major priority campaigns.
6) Help to develop the ability of the club to respond effectively to the
development of Habitat Conservation Plans, and develop public outreach
campaigns that work to strengthen federal and state policies regarding
Habitat Conservation Plans, Natural Community Conservation Plans
(California) or other similar programs.
7) Develop tools and resources which Sierra Club activists may utilize to
further the conservation of wildlife and endangered species, and the
preservation of habitat.
8) Represent the Club on wildlife and endangered species issues to other
members of the conservation community, to government officials, and to the
public at-large.
Committee Responsibilities
The Committee is expected to address issues per the charge above and to
report progress on its work through an assigned Committee Chair or through
the WPST Liaison to the Committee. Members of the Committee should not
advocate one narrow position, but evaluate all relevant information fairly
among all the differing viewpoints on any one issue. The Committee is
expected to conduct its business via email, telephone calls, and periodic
conference calls. A Chairperson shall be appointed by the WPST. Funds to
cover administrative costs of the Committee will be provided by the WPST on
a reimbursement schedule. Additional funds will be provided based on an
annual work plan submitted by the Committee to the WPST. Personnel,
financial, and other administrative matters should be communicated directly
between the chairs of the WPST and the Committee, or their designees.
