Please respond today if you plan to attend. See information at the end of this message for contact information. Rural Advocacy 2002 is sponsoring an educational session on antibiotic use in agriculture and antibiotic resistant infections. The session will be conducted by Dr. Tamar Barlam, M.D., 1:00-3:00 p.m., June 25, 2002 at Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, 2001 Forest Ave., Des Moines. Dr. Barlam is director of the project on antibiotic resistance with the Center for Science in the Public Interest and a leader of Keep Antibiotics Working: The Campaign to End Antibiotic Overuse (KAW). Dr. Barlam will address public health concerns about emerging infectious diseases that we may not be able to cure because bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics due to their overuse. She'll look at medical use of antibiotics as probably the major contributor to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, but will focus on the widespread overuse of antibiotics in animal agricultural and consequent public health and environmental impacts. Dr. Barlam will also discuss positive changes in antibiotic use in agriculture, related legislation pending in the U.S. Congress, and the ongoing work of KAW. Ample time will be provided for questions. For more information about the antibiotic resistance issue and the Keep Antibiotics Working campaign visit www.keepantibioticsworking.org.
