Take Action to Protect Communities and the Environment From Chemical
Accidents and Acts of Terrorism

This week the Senate will debate the Homeland Security Act, which is
intended to protect America from terrorism.  Please contact your
Senators today and urge them to support an amendment to make our
communities safe from toxic chemical accidents.  Adding the Chemical
Security Act, legislation developed by Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ), is
the best way to ensure that our communities are protected from
chemical accidents and acts of terrorism at industrial facilities.

Across the U.S., thousands of industrial facilities use and store
hazardous chemicals in quantities that put large numbers of Americans
at risk of serious injury or death in the event of a chemical release.
According to the U.S. EPA, in the event of a chemical release, 125
facilities each put at least 1 million people at risk.  Security at
these facilities is often poor or non-existent.

The Chemical Security Act, S. 1602 would require industrial facilities
to conduct vulnerability and hazard assessments then develop plans to
improve the security of the site and reduce chemical hazards through
    safer materials or processes.
