Sustainable consumption is probably THE most important factor concerning
environmental protection. We all buy, use, and waste more than we need
whether its food, housing, automobiles, clothing, water. If we would all live
to fit the supply instead of demanding the supply meet our wants there would
be much less for the Sierra Club to do. Example, during the 1974 energy
crisis, the 55 mph speed limit, smaller cars with four cylinder engines and
less driving due to high fuel costs saved incredible amounts of petroleum and
prevented a lot of pollution. We have been spoiled way too long which makes
it harder to change our ways. Perhaps people will think differently when
things become so scarce that price will put things we now take for granted
out of our reach. Jerry Neff
