30th Anniversary of Clean Water Act

DES MOINES - October 18, 2002 is the 30th Anniversary of the Clean
Water Act.  To mark the event, the day has also been designated
National Water Monitoring Day.  Here in Iowa, the Governor has also
recognized the importance of the day by proclaiming the entire week
Soil and Water Conservation Week.

To raise awareness of the importance of water quality, to look at
what has been accomplished in Iowa under the Clean Water Act and what
remains to be done, several organizations are sponsoring Friday's
event.

When:
18 October, 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.

Where:
Walnut Creek at the west end of the Wal-Mark parking lot, Windsor Heights

Trees Forever, USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service, Iowa
Environmental Council, Soil Conservation Districts of Iowa, Des
Moines Water Works, Walnut Creek Watershed Alliance, Dowling High
School, United States Geological Survey, Iowa Department of Natural
Resources, and others.

Goal:
A venue for the diversity of voices and perspectives on water quality
protection and improvement efforts in Iowa-for the past 30 years, for
today, and for tomorrow.

Activities:
Speakers will make brief remarks to the assembly, and be available to
the press.  Dowling students will demonstrate professional sampling
and stream assessment protocols as they collect data on Walnut Creek.
Information and other guests will be available to the public and the
press.

Directions:
 From I-235, take the 8th Street /Windsor Heights exit.  Proceed north
approximately one-half mile to the Wal-Mart parking lot entrance.
Proceed to the Sears Auto Center just over bridge on your right.
Parking is available on the south side of the Auto Center.   The
event takes place creek side, immediately to the west of the Auto
Center.
