Antibiotics in Poultry: 12/9/02 The Antibiotics in Poultry Report, released on December 9th in Minneapolis and Des Moines, and December 10th nationally examined the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in brand-name retail poultry products. The study, coauthored and released with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, found that many consumers are ingesting bacteria resistant to important human antibiotics like ciprofloxacin (Cipro). The Sierra Club's field release of the antibiotics report in Minneapolis and Des Moines was incredibly successful. Almost exclusively because of their organizing abilities, Kendra Kimbirauskas and Erin Jordahl were able to generate 17 media hits in one day and launch the report into the national spotlight. Because of advance press work by Kendra and the national media team, the story was carried by the CBS national feed, and print wires like the AP and UPI. The report got very good TV coverage in 26 different markets including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Houston, Seattle, Denver and Portland. The report was also featured in the health section of USA Today and featured prominent quotes from Ed Hopkins. Attached you'll find a summary of all media hits we've been able to find so far. I think that the AP story was carried in far more papers than we've been able to track so the print numbers are very conservative. Thanks once again to Ed, Navis, Kendra, Erin, Wendy, Matt and everyone else to helped put all the pieces together.
