If you depend on water, the Department of Natural Resources requests your presence. The Third Annual Water Monitoring Conference will be held Feb. 19-20 at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus. All citizens interested in water quality are strongly encouraged to attend. State officials will present a panel discussion on water quality and health effects on the evening of Feb. 19. Panel members representing the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, the Iowa Department of Public Health, the University of Iowa's Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination, and the Johnson County Department of Public Health will be on hand to share their thoughts on the challenges we face regarding health issues as they relate to water quality in Iowa. Other workshops will include "Landforms of Iowa," where the connection between the land and how it affects water quality will be addressed, "Open Discussion on Iowa's Water Quality Policies and Standards," where several experts will answer the many difficult questions pertaining to water quality and the law, and "Beaches 2002," which will touch on the current state beach policy and ongoing research designed to determine sources of bacteria, so that they may be reduced or eliminated. Poster presentations are welcome. Cost for the two-day event is $15.
