Marilyn Savage is one of a handful of representatives from the Gwich'in tribe of native Americans who travel the country educating others of their plight. The Gwich'in people depend on the caribou herd for survival, as they have done for over 8,00 years. The national Alaska Coalition involves such broad-based groups as the Izaak Walton League, Lutheran Chruch and Sierra Club, while the Iowa chapter has grown from almost nothing to nearly a dozen groups in just over two months. Groups across Eastern Iowa are hosting slideshows this week. Volunteers and spectators at the event will join hundreds of others across the state in educating citizens about the trade-offs involved in drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. According to these citizens, the small amount of oil likely to be buried under the Refuge would not suffice as a trade for the calving ground of the world's largest international caribou herd and America's last 5% of undeveloped Arctic. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To view the Sierra Club List Terms & Conditions, see: http://www.sierraclub.org/lists/terms.asp
