> Dear Joyce, Greg Brown ended his recent KUNI benefit concert in Cedar Falls with his haunting "I Want My Country Back." When he finished, the entire auditorium was still--and then the audience rose in a standing ovation. I'm afraid silences like that--but without the ovation-- will become more and more widespread as the Bush Gang stampedes us farther and farther into hostile, uncharted territory, quelling jingoist hy-vee-style celebrations all too soon. (Witness the violent demonstrations against us by Iraqi--majority--Shiites, civil disorder and incipient insurrection in several cities, Rumsfeld's and Bush's threats to Syria and Iran, and so on.) People may even one day tire of hearing, "It's Clinton's fault." (No, not all people, I know...) In the meantime, how about checking out central Iowa organic and sustainable food producers, picking up a loaf or two of whole grain bread at Great Harvest, buying a Greg Brown CD and learning "I Want My Country Back," praying (if that's part of your spirituality), and committing occasional, clandestine, random acts of kindness? If enough of us did that, how could Ayatollah Ashcroft's boys ever keep up with the investigations? Bill Witt Hello, Last night I shopped at HyVee in Ankeny. I won't do it again > for some time.
