OVERVIEW OF THE TRADE, HUMAN RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM COMMITTEE The Trade/HRE Program Committee provides volunteer oversight, coordination and action for two Sierra Club Programs: the Responsible Trade Campaign and the Human Rights and the Environment Campaign. Working with senior Sierra Club staffer Dan Seligman, the Trade Campaign helped lead the fight against "Fast Track" authority that gave the President the power to approve trade agreements that drastically undercut our national, state and local environmental laws. The Trade Campaign is currently working on developing Community Impact Statements on the effects of trade agreements on our domestic environmental and social regulations and laws. The Human Rights and Environment Program Committee works with club staff headed by Program Director Steve Mills. The HRE campaign is striving to make multinational corporations more accountable for human rights abuses of environmental activists in such places as Nigeria, Russia and Mexico, and pressing for Right to Know rules that would make U.S. corporations overseas accountable for their use and release of toxic materials. Members of the Trade/HRE Program Committee are appointed by the SPST. Committee terms are two year appointments. The Sierra Club has adopted six-year term limits for all national club committees. QUALIFICATIONS FOR TRADE/ HRE COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Applicants should have knowledge of and familiarity with one or more of the issues described above, and a broad interest in Trade and Human Rights work.
