Educated at Iowa State University, Tom received his BS in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology. After years of work in the conservation field, Tom returned to ISU and received an MS in plant ecology in 1990 with an emphasis in restoration of remnant, native grasses in Southern Iowa. In 1994, Tom earned his PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology with an emphasis in community and physiological ecology of native grasslands in the Loess Hills of Western Iowa. Tom has been part of the faculty of Drake University since 1996. Current titles include Associate Professor of Biology, Co-Chair of Environmental Science and Policy, Director of Drake Biodiversity Center and Drake Coordinator for Iowa Lakeside Lab. Tom is a sought after expert and speaker about the Loess Hills, leading numerous field trips and giving many public talks on various aspects of Iowa Natural History every year. Tom also is an accomplished photographer and his work has been published in magazines and calendars and displayed in photographic exhibitions.
