From: [log in to unmask] Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 14:00:21 -0400 Subject: Show them the science. Dear Water Activist, The Sierra Club and American Rivers recently asked eleven scientists to summarize the services wetlands and small streams provide society and the consequences of degrading these waters. The result is our most recent publication, "Where Rivers are Born: The Scientific Imperative for Defending Small Streams and Wetlands." This scientific paper is potentially a wonderful tool for explaining to your Representative in Congress exactly why it is of the utmost importance that they take action to protect our nations headwaters and wetlands. Several congressional champions for clean water, Representatives Saxton, Leach, Oberstar and Dingell are circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter to other members of Congress, asking them to join in urging the administration recall its guidance and discontinue their rulemaking process. Both actions, the guidance and the rulemaking, jeopardize the safety of many wetlands, small streams and ponds. Our efforts to gain signatures on the "Dear Colleague" letter will continue until the end of October and this scientific paper is a great tool. *Not sure if your Representative has signed onto the letter yet? A list of those who have signed on so far appears at the bottom of this email.* We have a limited number of printed copies of the new scientific paper and feel that a good way to use them would be to have activists bring them to their Representative's local office. If you are interested in sharing the information contained in the paper with your Representative, there are two ways you can do so. The ideal way would be to call the local office of your Representative and ask to set up a brief meeting. At the meeting, you could provide the staff person you meet with a copy of the "Dear Colleague" letter, the scientific paper and further information on the topic, if you feel that would be helpful. If you would like to pursue this option, we will gladly provide you with all of the written materials you will need and will prepare you with talking points for the meeting. If you want to get the scientific paper to your Representative, but don't have the time to set up a meeting, you could also mail the information, along with a cover letter that we would help you draft, to the local office of your Representative. Please call me or email me if you are interested in either of the above options and make sure to let me know the name of your Representative. Thank you! Ananda D.
