From: GREENLines, Wednesday October 8, 2003, Issue 1966 CORPS PROMISES BARGES FIRST! POLICY: The Army Corps of Engineers has announced that "it does not intend to lower flows" on the Missouri River next year to aid the survival of ESA listed species says Greenwire 10/3. The Corps' decision is apparently in open defiance of a July 2003 court ruling that ordered "lower flows for one month during the summer to aid the endangered pallid sturgeon, interior least tern and piping plover" and conservationists promised a new round of court battles. Unhappy with a USFWS finding that the lower flows are needed, the Corps also plans to release its own biological assessment that calls for habitat restoration but no changes in the flows to accommodate nesting and spawning. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Make your voice heard!
