*****************************************************************************************************
Dear Iowa Alaska Activists,
Last year, activists around Iowa convinced Representative Jim Nussle to keep oil drilling out of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. For almost twenty-five years, the oil industry has been working to industrialize the Refuge at great cost to the 300,000+ caribou that live there, dozens of species of migratory birds, and the Gwich’in people who depend on this wildlife for their subsistence culture. Last year, Representative Nussle stood up for his constituents against the powerful oil lobby. We need him to do that again this year.
The oil industry KNOWS that most Americans DO NOT want drilling in the Arctic Refuge, and they know that the long and confusing budget process is their best hope for sneaking Arctic drilling in through a back door.
In preparation for this year's budget struggle, the Alaska Coalition and National Wildlife Federation are bringing two events to the Quad City Area.

Faith Gemmill Biography:
An indigenous Alaskan raised in the traditional Gwich’in lifestyle, Faith has made conservation and native rights her life’s mission. Having grown up in the shadow of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic Refuge), Faith has a profound appreciation for our nation’s wild places, and for the importance of protecting them for the benefit of people and wildlife. She is particularly concerned with the threat of proposed oil development in and around the Arctic Refuge, and the dangers it poses to caribou and other wildlife.
Faith is currently program coordinator for the Gwich’in Steering Committee, which upholds the human rights and cultural survival of the Gwich’in Nation in the current debate about the Arctic Refuge. She works with the United Nations, where she promotes Indigenous human rights and works to protect the integrity of Indigenous knowledge and cultures. In addition, Faith has worked with environmental, religious and Native organizations around the world to address the threats facing the environment and her ancestral heritage.
