FYI: You are invited to a FREE Wetland Symposium, Sept. 13-15 in
Kansas City, KS
We are happy to invite you to the upcoming Wetland Symposium 2004,
September 13-15, 2004, at the Best Western Hotel, 501 Southwest Blvd.,
Kansas City, KS 66103. The Wetland Symposium 2004 is hosted by EPA
Region 7, and will feature a series of wetland seminars presented by
Charles Rhodes. Charles Rhodes has a B.S and a M.S. in Biology from
S.U.N.Y at Binghamton and Syracuse. He has worked at EPA, Region 3
since 1979 and is recognized as an expert in wetland delineation and
functional assessment, and has testified as a wetland expert in numerous
court cases. Mr. Rhodes presentations will include:
An Introduction to Wetland Ecology
A quick introduction to wetlands, including all the basic issues
of wetlands that are relevant to Section 404 of the Clean Water Act
and NEPA.
Wetlands and the Law
Lecture on the history of wetland regulation, following the legal,
political and social issues concerning wetlands which date
prior to the Constitution, through the past two centuries.
The Role of Science in Wetland Regulatory Programs Lecture explores
complex issues of when "science meets
politics."
The Use of Cumulative Impact Assessment in Wetland ProjectsYou
Lecture emphasizes the use of cumulative impact assessment in
Section 404 projects that have required an EIS,
difficulties in conducting cumulative impact assessments, case
studies that introduce cumulative impacts and larger geographic
perspectives for larger projects.
The Use of Reference In Wetland Functional Assessment
This seminar explores some of the current thinking on the use of a
suite of reference wetlands in assessing wetland function and designing
success criteria for compensatory wetland mitigation projects.
The Role of Microtopography in Wetland Function
This seminar uses illustrative examples of the influence of
microtopography on wetlands function in wooded wetlands.
In addition to the seminars, there will also be opportunity for open
discussion with Mr. Rhodes and EPA Region 7 wetland employees about
selected and requested wetland topics, such as mitigation, sustainable
urban development, outreach, etc. You are welcome to attend any one of
the seminars or all. There is no registration fee to attend the
