Calls are still needed to Rep. Jim Nussle, Chair of the House Budget Committee, to keep the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge out of the Budget Bill. Arctic Refuge Hotline Call Congress toll-free 1-888-8-WILDAK (1-888-894-5325) Talking points for members of Congress and letters to the editor. * Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge won't solve our energy problems. Estimated oil reserves in the Refuge would meet America's oil demands for only six months and would take 10 years to reach consumers. *Drilling in the Arctic Refuge would destroy our last great wilderness.: At Prudhoe Bay, Toxic spills occur at the rate of more than one a day. Arctic drilling requires seismic exploration trails, gravel mines, roads, drill pads, pipelines, processing facilities, operating and housing facilities and waste and sewage treatment facilities that would stretch across nearly 1,000 miles of coastal tundra. *The best ways to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil are to conserve more, waste less and invest in renewable forms of energy like wind and solar. *Technology exists today to make all new vehicles average 40 miles per gallon within 10 years. That would save more oil than we currently import from the Persian Golf and the tiny amount from the Arctic Refuge combined. Capitol Switchboard: 800-839-5276 Sen. Tom Harkin Sen.
