-------- Original Message -------- Subject: House hearing on CAFOs; new bill to exempt CAFOs from Superfund Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2005 13:16:42 -0500 From: Ed Hopkins <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: CAFO Campaign Leaders <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] On November 16 there was a hearing on CAFOs in the Subcommittee on Environment in the House Energy and Commerce committee. The specific subject was how the Superfund law applies to CAFOs. Testimony from the hearing is on the committee website at: http://energycommerce.house.gov/108/Hearings/11162005hearing1714/hearing.htm Sierra Club signed on to tesimony by the Enivonmental Integrity Project. People may also find the testimony of Robert Lawrence, from Johns Hopkins University, of interest. It provides citations to many of the CAFO-related health and environmental information. At the hearing, Rep. Ralph Hall of Texas introduced legislation (HR 4341) to exempt manure from Superfund. You can see the bill at: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c109:1:./temp/~c109XkDFIj:: It has 29 co-sponsors. This is similar to the amendments that Senator Craig of Idaho has promoted over the last year or so, the effect of which, in part, is to reverse a Sierra Club litigation victory in the case against Tyson Foods. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To view the Sierra Club List Terms & Conditions, see: http://www.sierraclub.org/lists/terms.asp - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To view the Sierra Club List Terms & Conditions, see: http://www.sierraclub.org/lists/terms.asp
