THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICANTS The Environmental Justice Committee (EJC) is seeking candidates with experience and/or expertise, plus a strong interest, in the following areas: civil rights; civil liberties; the environmental justice implications of issues such as toxics, waste, transportation, sprawl, Superfund and wildlands; providing tools and training on Environmental Justice and Community Organizing for Chapters and Groups; and serving as a resource to Club activists working on the Club's conservation issues, political campaigns, and organizational effectiveness. Service on the EJC requires a genuine commitment of time and energy. Activists who are already over-committed--as many of our best leaders are--may be asked to give up some of their current commitments in order to serve effectively as a Committee member. For a better idea of the work we do, please review the description of EJC below and the list of qualifications for appointment that precede the application form below. Selection of a minimum of three (3) committee members will be based on several criteria, including: (1) enthusiasm for environmental justice activism; (2) relevant area of interest and/or expertise; (3) geographic location; (4) willingness to work for an integrated program of environmental justice in the Sierra Club; (5) commitment to remain active on the committee for at least two years; (6) ability to communicate effectively orally and electronically; and (7) capacity to work both as part of a team and as an individual activist (while remaining in contact with the committee for guidance and consent). Appointments to the EJC are made by The Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST, part of the Conservation Governance Committee), based on the application and phone interviews with prospective candidates. The EJC is responsible for providing support and guidance to Club activists at all levels who are attempting to deal with environmental justice issues, for encouraging better communication among EJ advocates both inside and outside of the Club, for helping to shape national Club policies and positions that have environmental justice implications, for supporting the efforts of the Environmental Justice Grassroots Organizing Program, and for assuring that the Club's historic commitment to the principles of environmental justice is understood and sustained in all of the Club's endeavors. QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT We encourage people of color, activists of all ages, and both rural and urban activists to apply. Those that have experience as part of or working with communities of color and/or economically disadvantaged communities are especially encouraged to apply, as are applicants who live west of the Mississippi River. Our committee seeks those with (1) administrative skills; (2) understanding and experience with environmental litigation; (3) training; (4) organizing expertise; (4) budget management; (5) desktop publishing; (6) fundraising as well as other professional and Club experience. Use of electronic mail and participation in regular conference calls (generally in the evening) are required. EJC and EQST will assist an exceptional candidate who does not have and cannot afford email access. Also, ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences is important. (Transportation and lodging expenses are reimbursed by the EJC.) In evaluating nominations, the EQST strives to achieve diversity in geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections with grassroots leadership (current or recent-past Chapter or Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (a demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of activists at all levels (understanding the Sierra Club structure and internal processes is a plus).
