CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Building Environmental Community (BEC) -
Public
Education
Campaign Steering Committee
The Sierra Club's
Building Environmental Community (BEC) Public Education
Campaign seeks two
new members. The committee's goal is to build long-term
grassroots
political power and create a community dialog through one-on-one
contact and
communications around local issues, selected by participating
Groups
and
Chapters, and national priority environmental issues. By
establishing
one-on-one relationships with community members, it engages the
community
in
taking responsibility for addressing these issues.
The
BEC Program is designed as a 10-year Sierra Club grassroots
organizing
program which will seek to build long-range citizen power in
the
communities
selected for participation in the program. It was launched
in 2003 and its
initial focus was to encourage communities to take action to
stop the Bush
Administration assault on the environment within their local
community and
state.
Current BEC committee members are Don Parks
(Chair), Tarren Collins (Vice
Chair), Nathan Wyeth (Secretary), Dave Karpf,
and Tom Wolper.
Objectives of BEC are to:
(A) Build grassroots
citizen power in targeted communities, through
effectively
executing local
grassroots organizing campaigns around local and national
conservation
issues.
(B) Build one-on-one relationships within the targeted community
around
local
and national environmental issues.
(C) Promote
visionary solutions to environmental problems.
(D) Hold local and
national government leaders and corporations accountable
for
their
environmental decisions and actions.
(E) Double the size of the activist
and leadership base of the Sierra Club
by
recruiting and training at least
10 new leaders and 100 new activists per
year
in every targeted
location.
