AND ENDANGERED SPECIES COMMITTEE - REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
(Application deadline ? April 1, 2006)

The Sierra Club's Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST ) is seeking to fill three (3) vacancies on the Sierra Club's Wildlife and Endangered Species Committee (WESComm). WPST is especially interested in candidates with experience, expertise, and/or a strong interest in national and regional wildlife and habitat issues with a focus on threatened and endangered species. Applicants should offer a record of past volunteer involvement with Sierra Club, and a willingness to participate and work collaboratively on wildlife-related tasks and issues with other Committee members and staff.

Nominees must be current Sierra Club members. Selection of a new committee member will be based on several criteria, including: experience and knowledge of wildlife and endangered species issues, commitment to remain active on the committee for at least two years; ability to communicate effectively orally and electronically, capacity to work both as part of a team and as an individual activist.

WESComm members are expected to participate in the Committee's regular monthly conference calls, in other issue-specific conference calls as needed, and to communicate actively at other times via e-mail concerning Committee activities and wildlife issues of current interest. The Committee usually meets at least once a year to identify major upcoming wildlife issues of interest, plan activities, and finalize a Committee work plan for the upcoming year. Members are expected to attend this annual meeting (travel and lodging are reimbursed). The 2006 meeting is scheduled for June outside of Bozeman, Montana.

The committee covers issues that are national in scope so members frequently are involved in the analysis of and action on federal legislation in cooperation with the Club's Conservation Department, especially the DC office.

The Committee?s work includes the following:

(1) Build and support a network of activists to work on wildlife issues, including threatened and endangered species issues, and facilitate the exchange of information among activists to promote high quality and effective activism from the Club's ranks.

(2) Coordinate and support the Club?s campaign to protect the Endangered Species Act.

(3) Coordinate the Club's responses to legislative and administrative proposals at the state, federal, and international levels relating to the conservation and management of plant and wildlife populations and habitat.

(4) Serve as a resource and knowledge base for to other Club entities on wildlife and endangered species conservation issues. The committee may also issue guidelines and recommendations to other club entities in order to further the consistent implementation of Sierra Club policies and programs regarding wildlife and endangered species conservation.

(5) Develop tools and resources which Sierra Club activists may use to further the conservation of wildlife and endangered species and the preservation of habitat.

(6) Represent the Club on wildlife and endangered species issues to other members of the conservation community, to government officials, and to the public at-large.

CURRENT Committee Members; Liz Walsh (Chair), TX; John Burridge, RI; Debbie Neustadt, IA; Mike Smith, CO; Paul Wilson, WV; Rosemarie White, CA

Appointments to the Wildlife and Endangered Species Committee are made by the WPST based on applications and phone interviews with prospective candidates. Interviewers will represent WPST and the Committee. In evaluating applications, the WPST strives to achieve diversity in geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections with grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter or Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (which means a demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of activists at all levels.

If you are interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions completely. We are only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement on to others you think may have an interest in serving on the Committee. Sierra Club of Canada members are not eligible to apply.
