SATURDAY, APRIL 1:
Tour of Madison County Areas Proposed for Lake and Prairie Chicken Viewing
There are two parts to this April 1 Central Iowa Sierra outing:
The purpose of the first part of the outing is to view natural and historic
areas in Madison County that would be inundated by the proposed lake there.
Roslea Johnson will lead that part of the outing.
The second part of the outing is to view prairie chickens in Ringgold
County.
Meet at 11 a.m. in the east side of the parking lot of the Hy-Vee store
across from Valley West Mall in West Des Moines. From there we will carpool
to (East) Peru in Madison County where we'll enjoy cinnamon rolls and hot
soup, pie, etc. at the Peru United Methodist Church Ladies' event before
starting the tour. Member Roslea Johnson will fill us in on details of
local landowners' concerns about a lake that is proposed as we tour the
area. We'll take a hike at Clanton Creek Wildlife Refuge during our tour.
Then we'll continue the carpool to Kellerton Bird Conservation Area in
Ringgold County. There we will celebrate the return of spring by observing
Greater Prairie Chickens strutting and booming in their mating dance before
sunset, when the hilltop booming ground stirs to life. Dress for conditions
and wear shoes or boots suitable for walking on rough ground.
RSVP if you are interested in joining us for all or part of this
informative day in southern Iowa, by e-mailing Jane at [log in to unmask] or
by calling 515-223-5047. Please bring money for lunch and carpooling.
