Help Keep Factory Farm Manure out of our water!!
Attend the June 19th EPC Meeting!
We now have a chance to reduce the threat of factory farm manure to our
water by ensuring that the Iowa DNR’s water protection rule goes into
effect. Water Protection Rule – also known as the discretionary rule –
spells out the Iowa DNR’s authority to deny or modify a factory farm
construction permit or manure management plan in order to protect our water.
This is just common sense.
We all know that Iowa has some of the dirtiest waters in the nation. We have
had over 450 illegal manure spills and the list of impaired waters continues
to grow. Our state just authorized spending $18 million to clean up our
water. It is just common sense to ensure more pollution does not go into our
water. This is a great rule that Sierra Club, Iowa Chapter supports and
thinks is long over due.
Why is this rule different? This rule lays out the DNR’s ability to deny a
factory farm permit. If it is defeated, the DNR may say that their hands are
tied and cannot deny a permit. With all of the problems that factory farms
have created, the DNR must have the ability to say no.
Plan to attend the June 19th Environmental Protection Commission meeting to
support the passage of this rule. The EPC meeting will be held in Appanoose
County at Rathbun Regional Water Association Headquarters at 16166 Hwy J29
Centerville, IA 52544. The meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. and public comment
starts at 10:30 a.m.
The factory farm groups strongly oppose this rule. We need to show strong
support.
Also contact the EPC members and let them know that you support this rule
and you hope that they vote in favor of it.
