Dear Sierra Club Supporter, The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is under attack – again! Instead of identifying cheaper, cleaner, safer and forward-looking solutions to our energy problems, the House of Representatives – bowing to pressure from Big Oil and their political supporters – just passed a bill to allow drilling in the Arctic Refuge. We can't let this happen! The Sierra Club is working hard to stop this bill in the
Senate . . . and
we need your immediate support to keep drilling out of the Arctic Refuge
and preserve our last protected wild areas. |

As we know, America is still addicted to oil – even at three dollars a gallon – while oil companies are rolling in record high profits and average American families are feeling the pinch at the pump. But drilling in the Arctic Refuge will do nothing to change that. Even twenty years down the road, when Arctic Refuge oil would be at or near peak production, gas prices would only be affected by about a penny per gallon . . . and the pristine Arctic Refuge and the wildlife that depend on it for their survival would have been sacrificed for virtually nothing! If drilling is permitted in this beautiful wilderness area, the spectacular wildlife that depend on it for their survival will be lost forever. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to a wealth of wildlife – polar bears, wolves, caribou, musk oxen, numerous bird species and a host of other animals – and the harm caused by drilling would be permanent and irreparable. Some places are so precious they should be off-limits to oil drilling and industrial development... and the Arctic Refuge is one of them. Late last year, an against-all-odds victory for the environment was won when the Senate rebuffed attempts to attach drilling provisions to a Defense spending bill. We can't let this victory slip away! Thank you for your generous support. Carl Pope Executive Director | |||
