Call for Nominations: Livable Communities Committee The Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST) seeks to appoint additional members for the Sierra Club?s Livable Communities Committee (LCC), formerly known as the Building Healthy Communities Committee. If you would like to nominate yourself for appointment please complete and return the application below by November 1, 2006. The LCC works to improve the environment and people's lives through the promotion of better planned communities (sometimes called "smart growth") that increases transportation choices, reduces air and water pollution, addresses environmental justice concerns, and promotes natural places. This includes working with Sierra Chapters, Groups, activists and staff to affect public policy at all levels of government, as well as present opportunities for appropriate planning to the public and communities leaders. This committee serves as a resource to chapters and groups engaged in land use and transportation issues in their communities. The LCC will coordinate with the ongoing work of other Sierra Club committees such as The Safe and Healthy Communities CIC, Smart Energy Solutions CIC, Global Warming and Energy Committee and others. Candidates for the LCC should be active on the environmental impact of land use and transportation policy and should have at least general knowledge of transportation, the challenges of sprawl, land use or associated issues and have the motivation to work on resolving them. Current leadership with Sierra Groups and Chapters is preferred. Specialized expertise is welcome, as is familiarity with Sierra Club policies and processes at the national level. Candidates should have good management and social skills, as well as political and strategic judgment. Nominees must be current Sierra Club members residing in the United States . Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in conference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as the ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. Candidates need to consider their ability to contribute time and effort to LCC participation in addition to ongoing commitments. If you are interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions completely. We are only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement on to others you think may have an interest. Appointments to the LCC will be made by the EQST, based on applications and phone interviews with prospective candidates. The EQST is one of four Strategy Teams that deals, in general, with the impacts of pollution on communities and the environment.
