To The Editor,

Stone Path VI and its investors have plans to build a 2400 head hog confinement within 1 mile south of Mt. Carmel.  Our residents have expressed concerns to our county supervisors, DNR, the EPC and the owners/investors of the corporation.  We have to date over 700 signatures on a petition.  There is no control and protection for the people of our state. 

1)     Regulations/laws need to be made to keep CAFO's from being built within 2 miles or more from any community/village regardless of zoning.

2)      Why should the quality of life of more that 100 citizens be compromised for another investment for a few individuals/investors?

3)      Why should the values of 35-40 homes decrease in value by 10-20% for an investment? 

4)      Why would we risk further polluting Storm Creek, a tributary of the Raccoon River, when there has been so many problems already?

5)      Why should the health of individuals who already have respiratory problems be compromised for the sake of another dollar? 

The investors met with us and tried to tell us it won’t stink.  They were not aware of the health risks involved for the community and we informed them about various studies and recommendations especially down wind from a facility.  They said they will not accept responsibility for our health issues that may arise or worsen.  They also tried to compare hogs to humans.  Now how can anyone do that?  Our county supervisors asked them to consider another site, this is a community with a lot of good people. 

Control and quality of life: that’s what Mt. Carmel residents are urging our legislators to address in their next session in January.  Our state needs to take a stand to protect the people, air, land & water!  We need local controls for the counties and the ability for the counties and DNR to work together in stopping confinements from being built when the above are compromised.  Please keep this in mind November 7^th when you are voting for our next officials.  Please call your state representative and state senator and tell them we need to change our laws and put local controls in place!!!
