The Sierra Club Outdoor Activities Governance Committee (OAGC) is seeking
to fill a vacancy on the Local Outings Support Committee (LOSC), a national
committee of nine Sierra Club volunteers with a staff support person that
oversees outing programs run by chapters, groups, and sections. The LOSC
(formerly known as the Group and Chapter Outings Committee) is a
subcommittee of the OAGC, which reports to the Sierra Club Board of
Directors.

Current (2007) Local Outings Support Committee members are: Marc Hertz
(Angeles), George Kollar (Illinois), Virginia Laibl (Loma Prieta), Tom
Libby (Oklahoma), Mary-Slater Linn (Florida), Jacob Morgan (Rocky
Mountain), Katherine Pendleton (Tennessee), and Dan Soeder (Maryland), with
Danielle Vaughan as the committee support staff person.

More information about the committee, its scope and charge can be found at
http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/outings/GCO/gcoc.asp  (username: clubhouse;
password: explore)

If you are an experienced outings leader interested in the future of local
outings programs throughout the Club, please consider joining us. The
committee helps to provide local outings leaders with the training,
logistics and information resources needed to keep the club's local outings
program healthy and strong, and ensure that participants are safe, happy
and inspired.

Applicants must be members in good standing of the Sierra Club and be
experienced outing leaders. Former or current chapter or group outings
chairs are especially qualified.

Criteria for selecting new committee members includes experience with local
Sierra Club outings, familiarity with Club policies and procedures for
outings, familiarity with the localities being represented, and a record of
past volunteer leadership with Sierra Club, including a willingness to
participate and work collaboratively with other committee members and
staff.

Appointments to the Local Outings Support Committee are made by the OAGC,
and are based on applications and phone interviews. Appointment is for a
two-year term of service. Members may be reappointed for a maximum of
three consecutive terms. The current opening is to replace a committee
member who reached term limits at the end of 2006.

LOSC members are expected to participate in the committee's regular
(toll-free) monthly conference calls and to communicate actively at other
times via e-mail concerning committee activities. Committee members are
expected to travel once or twice a year to committee meetings and to stay
in regular contact with the chapter outing chairs assigned to them. (Sierra
Club reimburses for approved travel expenses incurred while on official
committee business.)

The Open Position will represent the following chapters: Maine, Rhode
Island, Northern Rockies, Wyoming, Oregon, Cascade and Montana, although
this may be adjusted as necessary. In the past, committee members
represented chapters and groups only in their regional geographic areas,
but the committee has broadened this rule to more equitably distribute
representation.
