If you have questions about the appointment process, contact Tom Wolper, [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> MISSION STATEMENT AND GOALS OF THE SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION COMMITTEE The Sierra Club's Sustainable Consumption Committee works to educate club members and others on the relations between individual, household, and institutional consumption of natural resources and larger environmental problems and to promote more environmentally sustainable patterns of consumption. We believe that consumption must be addressed as an integral aspect of our efforts to promote clean energy, preserve wilderness, protect human and nonhuman health, and create sustainable communities. Our long-term focus is sustainable consumption in three areas: energy use (especially in homes and transportation), food and agriculture, and forest products. Our current campaigns are: • True Cost of Food (TCOF), which advocates shifting food consumption more towards organic, locally grown, and plant based. (The latter involves reducing meat consumption overall, avoiding meat from factory farms i.e. CAFOs, and substituting grass fed, sustainably raised meat.) • True (Energy) Cost of Homes (TCOH), to be in place by this April, advocates sustainable home energy use in heating/cooling, appliances/electronics, and lighting/misc. (TCOH promotes all levels of commitment from everyday greening, through repair/remodeling, to buying/renting a low- or zero- energy home.) Committee priorities include support for Club activists working on consumption issues in their local communities, education about consumption issues (emphasizing those that support other Club issues, particularly its priority Conservation Campaigns), and dissemination of our materials via websites and Club publications. We also reach out to other organizations concerned about the link between consumption and environmental destruction. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS 1. Knowledge of and interest in the relations between consumption and environmental problems, especially relating to energy use (focus on homes and transportation), food and agriculture, and forest products. 2. Understanding of the Sierra Club's overall mission and approach to environmental problems and experience with the Club's chapter and/or group structure. Experience with national, regional, and/or local club campaigns and programs is also very helpful. 3. Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with people holding differing perspectives on the best strategies for the Club to follow. 4. Sufficient flexibility in time commitments to allow full participation in this committee. We invite applicants from all parts of the country, and especially those with strong local connections and experience, and those with expertise in our target issue areas (see #1 above). Sierra Club of Canada members may not apply. RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: 1. Participate in monthly conference calls 2. Attend our annual meeting. (Travel costs will be reimbursed.) 3. Contribute to ongoing committee work via email. 4. Take on at least one additional task. Examples: • Developing factsheets, writing articles, contributing to our website. • Collaborating with and/or supporting other Club entities, especially the Conservation Initiative Committees and the Agriculture Committee, by helping them with consumption-related aspects of their target issues • Supporting local Club sustainability committees or local joint projects with other entities. •Outreach beyond the Club to organizations, community groups and educational institutions.
